Dance

In Fall 2024, Emma began exploring dance and movement via pole. Through her childhood and into adulthood, Emma studied Modern and Ballet. Pole has introduced a new perspective and challenged how she thinks about her relationship with space. Pole has also introduced Emma to the beauty of spiraling shapes, inverted shapes, and physics.

Exploring space by drawing spirals

Emma envisions drawing imaginary spirals in the air by initiating movement from different parts of her body. First by drawing spirals with her feet, then her hips, then her torso, then her arms.  By shifting her body to a completely horizontal position she is able to draw a spiral with her head.

Exploring space by changing distance from pole

Emma explores the momentum and impact of changing the spacial relationship between her hips and the pole.  By moving hips closer to the pole, she can change the speed of her movement. By inverting, she can explore how changes in leg and arm grips can allow for movement of the legs.
